According to WorkSafeBC, a total of 138 work-related deaths were recorded in British Columbia, Canada in 2025.

The agency said 79 of these deaths were caused by occupational diseases, 36 of which were linked to asbestos exposure.

Another 41 deaths were caused by traumatic injuries such as falls or being struck by equipment at work, while 18 deaths were related to motor vehicle accidents.

The figures were released ahead of the annual Day of Mourning, which honors workers killed or injured on the job.

WorkSafeBC said the number of deaths has declined in recent years, from 181 in 2022 to 146 in 2024.

Men accounted for the majority of deaths, with 134 deaths in 2025, while women accounted for four deaths.

Todd MacDonald, head of prevention services at WorkSafeBC, said in a statement: “Behind every number is a person, a family, colleagues and a community that is forever changed.”

“The day of mourning is a time to remember the workers we have lost and a time to reflect on what we can do to make workplaces safer.”
