British police have arrested a man after two people were stabbed in Golders Green, a largely Jewish neighborhood in north London, the Jewish Community Defense Organization said on Wednesday.
It comes after the Metropolitan Police MET reported that a suspected arson attack had been carried out at a memorial wall in Golders Green, north London, and that the fire at the site in Limes Avenue broke out at around 12:15 GMT on Monday.
The organization, Shomrim, also said on X that a man was seen running away carrying a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public, before its officers detained him. The group said police then responded and deployed a Taser.
The volunteer group says the suspect was detained by Shomrim members before being arrested by police officers.
London’s Metropolitan Police further stated that the area is home to a large Jewish community.
“We believe this incident will heighten concerns in the Golders Green area, where residents have already suffered a number of attacks,” Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams said in a statement.
In the past month, counterterrorism authorities have arrested more than two dozen people as part of an investigation into attacks on Jewish-related compounds.
Although the investigation was being led by the Anti-Terrorism Squad, it was not considered a terrorist incident.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan also condemned the attack. He said the attack was “horrific” and that he was in close contact with the Metropolitan Police.
