Banksy is back in the headlines after artwork is revealed showing a huge new sculpture in central London.
The artwork depicts a statue of a suited man holding a flag in one hand and proceeding from a chair. Flags were seen waving, covering the man’s face.
The statue is located close to the statues of King Edward VII, Florence Nightingale and the Crimean War Memorial at Waterloo Palace.
The name “Banksy” is written at the base of the plinth, leading to speculation that an elusive street artist may be behind the artwork. However, no official announcement has been made to confirm any involvement.
Banksy is known for his stencil-style images painted on walls. In 2004, the artist deviated from his usual stencils to install a sculpture called The Drinker on Shaftesbury Avenue. However, the statue was stolen shortly after its installation.
Other notable works include Animal Trail, a series of animal-themed pieces throughout London, the Bayswater Mural, a piece depicting two children lying on the ground, and the Royal Courts of Justice, which depicts a judge hovering over a demonstrator holding a blood-stained placard.
Earlier this year, the mystery surrounding Banksy’s identity reached its most critical point. In March 2026, an extensive Reuters investigation claimed to have identified Banksy beyond dispute.
Reporters uncovered a handwritten and signed confession from an arrest in New York City in September 2000. A man was caught defacing a Marc Jacobs billboard. Court documents and a signed confession identify the perpetrator as Robin Gunningham.
