    luke 19

47 He preached every day in the temple courtyard, but the chief priests, experts in the law, and leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him. 48 He couldn’t find a way to do that because everyone was glued to him and listening.

    Jesus’ authority has been questioned

    luke 20

1 One day, while Jesus was teaching and preaching the gospel in the temple, the chief priests and experts in the law came to him along with the elders. 2 They asked him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Or who is it who has given you this authority?”

3 He answered them, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4 The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”

5 They discussed among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe in him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘On behalf of men,’ everyone will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7 So they replied that they did not know where it came from.

8 Jesus said to them, “I will not tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

    parable of the wicked tenants

9 He began telling the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, leased it out to some farmers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10 When the right time came, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect their share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenant farmers beat the servant and sent him away empty handed. 11 The man went ahead and sent another servant, but they also beat him, insulted him and sent him back empty handed. 12 Then he sent a third. They injured him too and threw him out. 13 The owner of the vineyard said, ‘What should I do? I will send my Son, whom I love. Maybe they will respect him.

14 “But when the tenants saw him, they began to talk among themselves. They said, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, so that the inheritance may become ours.’ 15 They threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. So what will the owner of the vineyard do with them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others.”

When they heard this they said, “May this never happen again!”

17 But he looked at them and said, what about this which is written:

The stone which the builders had rejected became the foundation stone? (1)

18 “Whoever falls on that stone will be broken into pieces, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”

19 At that very moment the chief priests and the scribes began to seek a way to lay hands on him, because they knew that he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of people.

    pay tribute to caesar

20 They watched him carefully and sent spies, who pretended to be honest, so that they could trap Jesus in something he said, and then deliver him over to the power and authority of the governor. 21 They asked him, “Teacher, we know that what you say and teach is right, and you show no partiality to anyone, but teach the way of God based on the truth. 22 Is it right for us to pay tribute to Caesar or not?”

23 But he knew their deceit, and said to them; 24 “Show me a dinar. (2) “Whose image and inscription are there on it?”

    “Caesar’s,” they replied.

25 He said to them, “Render then to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

26 They could not implicate him in what he said in front of the people. They were surprised by his answer and became silent.

    living God

27 Some Sadducees (those who say there is no resurrection) came to him. 28 They asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if someone’s brother dies, leaving his wife behind, but he has no children, then his brother should take that wife and raise children for his brother. (3) 29 Thus there were seven brothers. The first took a wife and died childless. 30 Another took her as his wife, (4) 31 And the third also did the same, and in the same way all seven of them also died, and they had no children. 32 Ultimately the woman also died. 33 So in the resurrection, whose wife will she be? Because all seven of them found her as their wife.”

34 Jesus said to them, “People of this generation marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are of that age and considered worthy to experience the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given marriages. 36 Actually, they can’t die anymore, because they’re like angels. They are the sons of God, because they are the sons of the resurrection.

37 “Even Moses told of the burning bush that the dead come alive, when he called upon God: ‘God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob.’ (5) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all are alive.”

39 Some experts in the law replied, “Teacher, you are well said.” 40 Then they did not dare to ask him anything.

Son of David and Lord of David

41 Jesus said to them, “How do they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 David himself says in the book of Psalms:

The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand, 43 until i make you an enemy
A stool under your feet.” (6)

44 “So David calls him ‘Lord.’ Then how is he his son?”

    beware

45 While everyone was listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of experts in the law, who love to walk around in long robes and greet in the marketplaces, the best seats in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. 47 They swallow widows’ houses and say long prayers to look good. He will receive more condemnation.”
