Consider this a formal announcement: After living in New York City for nearly a decade — practically my entire adult life — I’m packing up most of the things that fit inside my Upper West Side one-bedroom apartment and moving across the country to Los Angeles. This is a big deal, one that’s forced me to take a good, long look at my wardrobe and decide what’s inside it is worth bringing across the country. Seriously, even when I’ve been moving in and out of apartments here in New York, I’ve never cleaned out any closets involved. I’ve always thrown my things haphazardly into boxes and carried them from one part of the city to another. However, this time, I’m going full tilt inward, which means Marie Kondo is making its way into my closet. If a trend is not making me happy, WellIt’s not factoring into my New York City-to-Los Angeles transfer. Duration.
After much consideration, I’ve narrowed it down to six trends I’m leaving behind (and six anti-trend alternatives that I’ve deemed worthy of this next step in my life). Only the pieces I really like are coming with me, which is still a lot of stuff. After all, I’ve spent my 20s designing clothes, shoes, handbags, and more with a high level of intention. I’m not going to finish all that work just like that. However, I’m being selective, and anyone who’s still checking off all my boxes will soon be enjoying the sunny weather with me in L.A. Keep scrolling to find out what made the cut and who’s getting the boot before the big move.
Departure: Sentimental Graphic T-Shirt
Packing: Polished Tees
Over the years, I’ve kept hundreds of sentimental graphic T-shirts from sporting events, concerts, fashion parties, and more, storing them in bins under my bed that I rarely open, let alone think about. If you live in NYC, you know how little space there is, so I really don’t know why I’ve kept these for so long, even though graphic tees Are Trending again. However, a move is a great excuse to stop holding on to things you never wear, so I’m finally getting rid of my built-up collection and only keeping polished, classic basics like boatnecks and V-neck t-shirts that I know I’ll wear again and again.
Departure: capri pants
Packing: low rise trousers
I know capri pants will likely be trending in both NYC and Los Angeles, especially this summer, but I’m officially on the silhouette and refuse to bring a single pair with me. What I will wear again and again, however, are low-rise tailored trousers. Sleek, polished, but also easy and versatile, they’re the perfect pants for those days when I don’t know what to wear in a city I’m still getting used to.

’90s Low-Rise Wool Straight-Leg Pants
Departure: Classic Pumps
Packing: Heeled Sandals
I love a classic pump as much as the next girl, but I think in LA, I won’t need them as often as I do in New York. Instead, I’m making more room for it High-heeled sandals that feel easy to dress up or down. Pumps are great, but they’re not the most versatile, and in a moving truck, every square inch counts (and costs).
Ditch: Heavy sweater
Packing: delicate weaving
I have long been the proud owner of a large number of heavy, thick sweaters that I have acquired during my many years of living in Chicago and New York, where warm clothing is essential. Now that I’ll live somewhere that’s warm year-round, I’m looking forward to my transformation Knitwear collections for more lightweight, delicate options that feel less casual and more sophisticated.
Departure: Miniskirt
Packing: pencil skirt
Whenever I tell someone I’m moving to Los Angeles, they ask me how I think my style will change, and honestly I don’t believe it will. Sorry, but I’ll be the one to wear heels Boots and a pencil skirt when everyone else is wearing leggings and sneakers. This is what I do. So, yes, pencil skirts will be a big part of my LA wardrobe, even if it’s difficult to get in and out of a car. What skirt trend wouldn’t be included in this scenario? mini skirt. I’ve put them in the past, and I don’t mind it.
Departure: trendy denim
Packing: Forever Straight-Leg Jeans
Somehow, I managed to fit over 30 pairs of jeans in my New York City apartment, but I refused to move forward with that entire collection, which is why I’ve decided to remove all “trendy” denim from my closet and only pack the pairs that I know will last in my closet forever. barrel? Bitten? colorful? Sorry, but these are just my tried-and-true straight-leg styles Levy, Khaite, Citizens of Humanity, etc. made the cut.
