If a celebrity wore a nude dress to a regular old movie premiere, it wouldn’t garner as much attention. However, if they wore it to the Met Gala, it would instantly enter the fashion lexicon. The sheer and illusionistic dresses on those museum stairs have become headline-makers time and again, and we have Cher to thank for that. She wore a sparkly Bob Mackie number to the 1974 event, which caused quite a stir. These days, this trend isn’t as controversial as it was then, but it’s no less memorable.

No one did it like Beyoncé at the Met Gala in 2015, when she arrived in an embroidered Givenchy gown with glittery embellishments that caught the lights (and every camera angle) perfectly. That’s why this year feels right for a full-circle moment. Beyoncé is officially back at the Met for the first time since 2016 — and this time, she’s co-chairing. Expectations are, obviously, very high. But she’s not the only one who made the look memorable. At the 2024 ceremony, Elle Fanning debuted her own version with a glass-like gown that was a true work of art. Scroll down to revisit other great moments on the Met Gala red carpet.
