Motorola recently introduced the 2026 Razr series, and once again, we are getting incremental upgrades. The book-style Moto Razr Fold is exciting in itself as Motorola is finally catching up to Samsung and Google in this area, but that foldable is coming sometime later this year.
But the Razer, Razer+ and Razer Ultra are mostly unchanged from their predecessors, and if anything, the base-level Razer is the one with minor upgrades. Since Motorola isn’t changing too much this generation, the focus turns to next year, and whether we’ll get better hardware on the next generation Razr devices – that’s what I’d like to see with Motorola’s 2027 foldables. Obviously, there’s no concrete information about what Motorola is planning with its 2027 refresh, but I’ll add all the relevant details to this post once they become available.
We need 256GB storage
While the base-model Moto Razr has a lot to offer, it now comes in at $799, which is $100 more expensive than its predecessor. The annoying thing is that it only gets 128 GB of base storage, and that is not enough in 2026. I switch between phones on a weekly basis, and 128GB is no longer enough to accommodate all my apps, much less the hundreds of photos I take on a weekly basis.

I realize the cost of memory and storage products has gone up a lot now, but that’s no excuse for halving the storage while increasing the price – last year’s Razer 2025 had 256GB of base storage.
Motorola should make a mid-range razor
On the subject of pricing, Motorola needs to make a mid-range foldable. A Razr device in the $500 to $600 range would sell really well, and while older models inevitably go on sale around these prices, a mid-ranger would allow Motorola to make even more inroads into the foldable category.
Motorola has a good 50% share of the US foldable space, and a lower-priced model would go a long way in building out its portfolio. Motorola doesn’t even need to do much; Retain the same specifications as the Razer 2026, but with just one camera, no MIL-STD 810H rating and a regular battery (instead of the silicon model), and that should allow it to sell at a lower upfront cost. Whether Motorola actually does this is a completely different matter.
Razer+ models desperately need an upgrade
Motorola focused most of its attention on the base Razr this year, and the result is that the Razr+ is virtually identical to the 2025 Razr+ – which itself was indistinguishable from the 2024 model. Basically, the 2026 Razr+ is a three-year-old phone at launch, and apart from a larger battery that now uses silicon technology, there aren’t really any changes to the device.
With the Razr+ 2027, Motorola needs to deliver a massive upgrade to justify the existence of the foldable. A brighter OLED panel with overhauled internals is essential; While the 8s Gen 3 is blazing fast, the $1,000 foldable needs at least the same power as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.
We also need better cameras; While Motorola has added a LOFIC camera to the Ultra, the Razr+ 2026 still has the same cameras as the Razr+ 2024, and while the underlying camera algorithms have been changed, it’s still in dire need of a refresh.
The Razer Ultra 2027 needs to justify its name
While the Razer Ultra has a new camera that is similar to the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the device does not have the latest internal features. It is not using Qualcomm’s highest-end platform, and is due to be replaced in 2027. Motorola doesn’t even have a 1TB model this year, and it needs to return next year.
Any ultra device – foldable or otherwise – requires the latest technology, and not having that this year is serious. The 2026 Razer Ultra is $200 more expensive than its predecessors, but that’s not enough to justify the price increase. I don’t know why anyone would buy a foldable when it was last year’s Ultra Available now on Amazon for only $699. Motorola is doing a good job of differentiating itself by offering unique designs, and it needs to do the same with the underlying hardware in 2027.
We need more software updates
While Google and Samsung guarantee seven years of software updates on their phones, Motorola’s foldables are lagging behind in this area. The 2026 Razer models only get three guaranteed Android OS updates along with five years of security updates, and that’s not enough.
Motorola is doing interesting things with software; New The Google Photos integration on the 2026 Razer models is unique, and makes the cover screen much more useful. And while Motorola’s general software and interface remains clean, it needs a visual overhaul and better features.
The Razr Ultra 2025 is still a great option if you want a new Motorola phone, and the best part is that it costs less than half the price of the 2026 model.
