Defense Minister Boris Pistorius argues that the US troop withdrawal should be a catalyst for Europe to enhance its military capabilities.
The Pentagon has announced the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany, the United States’ largest military base in Europe.
The decline is seen as a direct result of rising tensions between Washington and Brussels over the ongoing war in Iran and aggressive trade tariffs.
As reported reutersThe withdrawal included the cancellation of an entire brigade and long-range fires battalion. Berlin described it as a significant blow to European deterrence against Russia. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Washington’s “salvo” should inspire Europe to strengthen its defense.
Pistorius said, “We Europeans must take more responsibility for our own security.” “Germany is on the right track by expanding its armed forces, accelerating military procurement and building infrastructure,” he said.
He plans to increase the active-duty force of the Bundeswehr from 185,000 to 260,000. Despite pledges to take greater responsibility, experts warn that limited budgets and huge military capability gaps mean it will take years for Europe to regain security independence.
While troops are leaving, vital centers such as Ramstein Air Base and Landstuhl Hospital remain vital to supporting active US combat operations in Iran.
The Pentagon’s decision to withdraw from Germany includes canceling a planned long-range fires battalion deployment. This is a major blow to deterrence against Russia, which comes just as the Europeans have begun developing their own long-range missiles to fill the gap.
