I’m doing a very slow, thoughtful, wardrobe audit before summer. Not in a dramatic “throw everything away” way, but in a more Do I really need this? Kind of why. And somehow, sandals have been the category where I have felt the change the most. Styles I used to reach for without thinking suddenly no longer seem trendy, exaggerated, or as over-the-top as I’d like them to be.
Common thread? Everything is becoming lighter, more intentional and a little less TikTok-feed driven. It’s less about chasing the latest trend and more about finding styles that really suit my personal tastes. But at the same time, it’s the styles I’ve worn over the years, regardless of trend cycles, that are well-crafted that stand out. I won’t toss them until they’re all destroyed. So if you’re also feeling like your favorite sandals aren’t doing so well this season, these are the changes I’d personally be making as someone who has amassed a huge collection of sandals to choose from.
I’m Trading: Chunky Flip Flops
For: Minimal Thong Sandals
I’m Trading: Athletic Slides
For: Utilitarian Styles
Athletic slides are undeniably handy, but they’re best left at home for smaller errands, including going out. Perfect for walking the dog but not perfect for spending actual time in the city. They are incredibly deliberate.
I am trading: PVC (Clear) Styles
For: a special description
Clear PVC sandals used to seem like an easy way to make an outfit look modern, but now to me, they seem a little too glamorous. I found it painful to do so but I said goodbye to my favorite couple. I don’t think his time in my life will come back any time soon. They’re being replaced by sandals with thoughtful, unexpected details — like sculptural hardware, 3D florals, or subtle embellishments. It’s still attention-grabbing, just in a way that feels more elevated and less effortful.
I’m Trading: Cork Soul
For: Texture
Cork soles will always have a place, but right now they’re feeling a little too casual for where my style is headed. They can also make a nice outfit seem like a bit of a “weekend chore” when that’s not the goal. Instead, I’m drawn to textured materials—Raffia, knitted leather, anything with dimension.
I’m in business: logo styles
For: Pops of color
Logo sandals were having a moment, especially when I first started working in fashion, but overt branding is starting to feel a bit dated — especially as everything else is moving toward wearing things that feel insanely expensive. What looks more fresh is the color. A deep red, a soft butter yellow, even a deep chocolate – these colors do more for an outfit than a logo, making such a subtle statement.
