Nairobi, Kenya — recent flood during the ongoing heavy rains in kenya Police said on Sunday that 18 people had died in the past week, most of them due to drowning.

More than 54,000 homes have been affected by flooding across the country, according to the Interior Ministry, including 6,000 in the capital, Nairobi.

Dozens of schools and hospitals across the country have been flooded and 17 roads have been cut off.

Landslides have forced thousands of people to flee the Western Rift Valley region, while people living downstream of the Tana and Athi rivers have been urged to move to higher ground as water levels rise at the country’s hydropower dams.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that increased rainfall is expected to continue in the first two weeks of May.

Heavy rains in the country began at the beginning of the rainy season in March and left a trail of destruction, killing more than 100 people by the end of March.
