This is why financial advisors sometimes call it the “bus test.” It’s obvious, a little morbid, and immediately obvious: If you got hit by a bus tomorrow, besides dealing with the immediate consequences, would the people you love know how to sort out your affairs? Will they be able to access your accounts? Will they be protected? Will your wishes really come true? For most people, the honest answer is…probably not. We spend years building wealth – saving, investing, growing a business, paying off the mortgage – but remarkably little time making sure the money gets where we want it to go. These conversations feel uncomfortable and somehow not urgent, not anyway. That is why they are postponed. Frequently. Often until it’s too late.
