In early 2026, Microsoft and Xbox announced that the platform will bring new updates to Gaming Copilot for the Xbox mobile app, providing interested users with a means to integrate AI into their gaming sessions. However, it seems like the company is now shifting gears, or rather, putting a halt to it, regarding its AI strategy for gaming.
posting on it Official social media pagesXbox boss Asha Sharma announced that in addition to gradually “ending” Copilot for mobile devices, Microsoft will end development of Copilot on its Xbox consoles. She says:
Xbox needs to move faster, deepen our connection with the community, and remove friction for both players and developers. Today, we promoted the leaders who helped build Xbox, while also bringing in new voices to help move us forward. This balance is important as we get the business back on track. As part of this change, you’ll notice that we’re starting to remove features that don’t align with our direction. We will begin decommissioning Copilot on mobile and stopping development of Copilot on console.
As far as the “console wars” are concerned, Xbox hasn’t exactly had a great ride over the past few years, especially with the competition. From Sony’s extremely popular PlayStation 5 chain system. That said, it seems like Microsoft’s Xbox division is determined to win back fans after making big promises on the future of the platform, including the upcoming Project Helix system, as well as a major pivot towards its branding strategy.
Going back to the new Copilot announcement, it certainly surprised some people, given the emphasis Microsoft has placed on its AI services, which has received quite a bit of backlash from some users recently. Of course at this point it’s too early to tell how Xbox will proceed overall, but so far management is saying all the right things, especially to fans.
