A legal recruiter went viral this week saying that companies are firing Singaporeans in order to hire other workers from Southeast Asia who are hungry. Because the words chosen were somewhat inappropriate, angry Singaporeans took the message viral. This benefited me too: I forwarded someone’s comment on this, and my message got over 12 thousand views on LinkedIn.
I congratulate Li Shulin for successfully becoming famous overnight, because there is no such thing as bad publicity, and I do not agree with personal attacks on him. However,
I think there is enough room to criticize his argument.
First of all, I think it’s hard to label Singaporeans as not being hungry enough. We are a successful city-state, and we solved the problem of hunger decades ago. Expecting Singaporeans to bow down and be exploited by SMEs (many legitimate companies are just SMEs)
