Before the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Lucknow Super Giants were at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table. With 7 losses in 9 matches, they were already on the verge of elimination, while RCB were looking to claim the number two spot by defeating LSG at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday, May 7.
Mitchell Marsh’s inning of 111 runs changed the entire course of the LSG vs RCB match. The wicket was not ideal for the batsmen, but Marsh made it look easy. When RCB came to bat in the second innings, Mohammed Shami and Prince Yadav took the wickets of Jacob Bethel and Virat Kohli in the first and second overs respectively.
LSG beats RCB in rain-affected match in Lucknow
RCB were immediately on the backfoot with the fall of two wickets in a row while they were chasing the target of 210 runs in 19 overs. Due to rain the 20 over match has been reduced to 19 overs. RCB fought well till the last over, but they missed out by only 6 runs.
Ideally, 16 points with a good net run rate is considered enough to seal a place in the playoffs. If multiple teams have the same number of points, the net run rate will come into the equation. Before the RCB match, LSG had only 4 points. With the win against Royal Challengers Bangalore, they currently have 6 points with four more matches left in their remaining group fixtures.

Will LSG qualify for the play-offs?
LSG will have to play a few matches against Chennai Super Kings and one match each against Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings. If LSG is able to win all their remaining games, they will have 8 more points in their bag, taking the total to 14. Still, they would fall short of the 16-point mark. Besides, Lucknow Super Giants will also have to take care of their net run rate.
They will also have to keep an eye on the matches of other teams. Mathematically, there might have been a fraction of a chance for LSG to qualify for the play-offs, but in reality, it seemed almost impossible. Other teams close to fourth place in the table, like Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and even Chennai Super Kings are also in the race.
Lucknow Super Giants finally won at home
Lucknow Super Giants defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 9 runs via DLS method in a rain-affected thriller, one of the few bright moments of this season. However, the win came after six consecutive losses in the tournament.
Rishabh Pant’s team will get relief by winning its first home match after 8 defeats on this ground. In the next game, they will face Chennai Super Kings, which is an important encounter for both the sides keeping in mind the top 4 finish.
