The Boys is nearing its end. However, some fans are unhappy that the final season contains, according to them, many “filler” episodes.
Show creator Eric Kripke took a dig at them, saying, “Nothing that happens in the last few episodes will matter if you don’t make the characters better. To put it politely, I’m getting a lot of dissatisfaction online.”
He further tells TV Guide, “And I say, ‘What are you expecting? Are you expecting a huge battle scene every episode?'”
Kripke says, striking directly at the core of the criticism. “At no point during the writing of it did I feel like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re making filler episodes. So who cares?’ We all thought at the time, “We’re really getting these important character details.”
He explains, “We have about 14 characters, maybe 15. And I owe it to all of them – television is the character business – I owe it to all of them to flesh them out and humanize them and their stories.”
Kripke also defended him and his writers, pointing out that they introduced some “crazy, big things” in Season 5.
So far, there have been no major battles, leading some viewers to question the final season.
“But apparently, just because it’s not a conspiracy, you’re saying, ‘Nothing happened!’ I say, ‘Nothing happened, what?'” he shares.
“The weirdest, biggest moves happened. It wasn’t like someone was shooting someone else and going, pew, pew, pew. And if that’s what you want, you’re just watching the wrong show.”
The finale of The Boys will hit theaters on May 19, then stream on May 20.
