US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a ceasefire with Iran was holding despite fresh firing between US and Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump told ABC News during a phone interview: “The ceasefire is going on. It’s in effect”, describing the US strikes on Iranian facilities as “just a loving touch”.
The comments came after Iran accused the United States of violating the ceasefire by targeting an Iranian oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation later stabilized after US and Iranian forces clashed in and around the strategic waterway, according to Iranian state media outlet Press TV.
“Following the firing over the past few hours, the situation on Iranian islands and coastal cities near the Strait of Hormuz has now returned to normal,” Press TV reported.
US Central Command said US forces struck Iranian military sites with missile, drone and small boat strikes against US Navy destroyers traveling through the strait.
“U.S. forces deterred unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defense strikes as U.S. Navy guided missile destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman on May 7,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
The military said no US assets were damaged and stressed that US forces “do not seek to escalate” but remain prepared to defend themselves.
