Australian cricket is set to face another tense period, as contract tensions between the national top players and Cricket Australia (CA) are now turning serious. At least five senior Australian cricketers are reportedly unhappy with the initial contract offers for the 2026-27 season.

He has not signed the Cricket Australia (CA) deal yet. At the same time, disappointment is also increasing among many big names of the Big Bash League. Many BBL stars are now seriously considering playing in a foreign league rather than staying in Australia.

The main reasons behind this anger are the long-standing pay gap with foreign leagues and the delay in finalizing the new payment structure after the BBL privatization plan slowed down.

Top Australian players unhappy with Cricket Australia’s contract offers

Australia’s top five players are not happy with the first set of contracts recently offered by Cricket Australia (CA), reports ESPN Cricinfo. Some players believe that the structure does not fully match the reality of modern cricket, where franchise leagues are now paying huge sums.

Under the existing agreement between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA), which will continue until mid-2028, the selectors can offer national contracts to a maximum of 24 players for the 2026–27 season.

These contracted players will share approximately A$21.9 million in their base annual salaries between July 2026 and June 2027.

How CA’s current contract system works

Players are given contracts according to their importance to the team and how many matches they are expected to play during the season. Even the lowest ranked contracted player earns a base salary of approximately A$360,645.

In addition to this fixed amount, players also receive additional match fees – approximately A$19,000 for each Test match, approximately A$8,000 for each ODI, and approximately A$5,000 for each T20I they play.

They also receive bonus money when Australia wins a match, giving each player a total of approximately 30,000 Australian dollars for a Test win. Additionally, contracted players can also earn additional money through Cricket Australia’s marketing deals and sponsorship activities.

Players are attracted to franchise leagues

But despite all this, some cricketers are not satisfied with the offer, as they can earn more by playing in global franchise leagues. Leagues around the world are offering massive contracts and Australian players are very aware of this. Those opportunities are becoming increasingly difficult for Australian players, especially white-ball superstars, to ignore.

There is another concern also. With huge sums of money being offered by franchise leagues, many players feel that a 12-month Cricket Australia contract can actually reduce their annual earnings. They want to be free to play in foreign leagues without permission and earn more money on the world stage playing for Australia with annual contracts.

Top BBL players discuss future amid pay dispute

Meanwhile, reports suggest that around 12 top Australian BBL players are angry after the BBL privatization plan was delayed. The players also formed a WhatsApp group last year to discuss their future as they were frustrated with the pay gap between local and foreign players in the Big Bash League for the past three years.

CA was planning to hold fresh wage talks with ACA during the privatization process, but the plan was delayed after two states refused to move forward. Now a new hybrid model is being prepared, but everything has been put on hold. Now, many BBL stars are exploring overseas options, especially with the ILT20 league starting before the BBL this year. Some Australian players have already received offers of close to AUD 500,000 to play in the UAE.

Even though players do not expect to receive such huge sums of money immediately in the BBL, they were hopeful that the pay gap would narrow this year before major changes come in 2027-28. CA had also proposed increasing the BBL salary cap to A$1.5 million.
