Tehran’s “restraint has ended”, an Iranian parliamentary spokesman said on Sunday amid ongoing tensions with the United States.
“As of today (Sunday), our restraint has ended. Any attack on our ships will be met with a heavy and decisive Iranian response against American ships and bases,” Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesman for Iran’s parliament’s foreign policy and national security committee, said on American social media company X.
Rezaei also warned that “time is running against the interests of the Americans.”
“The best path (for the US) is to surrender and make concessions,” he said. “They will have to adapt to the new regional arrangement,” he said.
Regional tensions have risen since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel as well as US allies in the Gulf, as well as closing the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire came into effect on 8 April through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a permanent agreement.
The ceasefire was later extended without any time limit by US President Donald Trump, paving the way for diplomacy towards a permanent resolution to the war.
However, since April 13, the US has imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the waterway.
