Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) opening batsman Jacob Bethel has responded to the debate involving former England captain Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen regarding his career decisions. The young batsman defended his decision to continue playing in the IPL instead of returning to England for domestic red-ball cricket.
Cook said playing in the County Championship for Warwickshire would help Bethel in the Test series against New Zealand rather than remaining on the bench for RCB. However, Pietersen argued that training with world-class players in an IPL environment would accelerate the development of the youngsters.
I think I made the right decision – Jacob Bethel defends IPL option
Jacob Bethel opens up about his growth and the debate surrounding his career choices. The left-handed batsman said that people may have different opinions, but he believes that spending time in India and learning with top international players is the right step for his development.
“This is the biggest tournament of the year, with some of the best cricketers in the world playing. Everyone thinks differently, but from a personal point of view, I think I have taken the right decision. This is the biggest tournament of the year, with almost all the best cricketers in the world playing,” Bethel told reporters ahead of the IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians.
I’m very happy where I am – Jacob Bethel
Jacob Bethel further said that he does not feel that his IPL stint will have a negative impact on his development or future career. The young batsman said that he is happy with his current situation and feels that experience will only help him improve as a cricketer.
He said, “I definitely don’t think it’s going to hurt my career or stop me from getting better. I think it’s going to do the opposite. Everyone is allowed to think what they want. That’s absolutely fine. Everyone thinks differently, but from a personal standpoint, I think I made the right decision. At the end of the day, I’m quite happy with where I am.”
Bethel started the tournament on the bench as RCB prioritized the opening partnership of Virat Kohli and Phil Salt. It was only after Salt injured his finger and returned home for a medical scan that he got his chance. However, the youngster has struggled for consistency since breaking into the playing eleven.
I never felt like I was fighting for a spot – Jacob Bethel
Jacob Bethel said his focus remains on contributing to the team’s success rather than worrying about his place in the playing eleven. The young player admitted that so far in the tournament he has not given the start that he expected from himself.
Bethel said, “I never really felt like I was fighting for a spot. At the end of the day, I didn’t score the runs I wanted to score. And that didn’t help the team. My goal as a batsman is to go out there and score runs and get us off to a good start, and I didn’t do that.”
“So it’s not from a place of looking behind my back and fighting for a spot, it’s really more from a hunger to contribute to this team. It doesn’t feel good when you’re not contributing to any wins. And especially now that we’ve lost the last few games, there’s a strong desire to go out there and put in a match-winning performance,” he said.
Bethel has so far registered scores of 14, 20, 5 and 4 at an average of 10.75 with a strike rate of 138.70. Royal Challengers Bangalore will next face Mumbai Indians in Raipur, where a win can take them closer to the top of the IPL 2026 points table.
