As Mother’s Day approaches, Savannah Guthrie still doesn’t know where her mother, Nancy – who has been missing for nearly 100 days – is.
Dr. Jenny Shields, an expert psychologist, says, “For many families, Mother’s Day is a blissful blur of brunch reservations, flowers, and handmade cards.”
However, for others, “the second Sunday in May is the heaviest day of the year.”
Navigating such an emotional minefield is a challenge for the Guthrie family.
They are already shocked by Nancy’s mysterious disappearance.
Shields explains it this way, “The first Mother’s Day after a loss often brings a special kind of pain. The ‘first’ in grief has a way of magnifying the absence.”
Experts explain further parade“An empty chair sounds louder. Silence sounds louder.”
Facing the situation of loss or disappearance deals a blow to the emotional state of their loved ones.
“Celebration and grief collide in ways that people rarely expect until they experience it themselves.”
What’s worse, Nancy’s unknown fate adds to the family’s pain.
A day earlier, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos had suggested that authorities were close to solving the mystery.
However, the investigation is yet to trace the suspect in the alleged kidnapping of the 84-year-old man.
