New Zealand Cricket’s plans to launch its new franchise T20 league, NZ20, has been delayed. Now, the league will be launched in December 2027 instead of the originally planned window of January 2027.
On Monday, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) explained the delay and the reasons related to it. Among other reasons, the board said that the busy international calendar played a role in delaying the launch.
The NZ20 was planned to be launched for both men and women at the same time.

NZC said in its statement that it “Is working closely and constructively with all parties to advance discussions regarding the proposed award of licenses and the establishment of the new league.
The statement also said that with several Test series being locked during the season, it has become difficult to move ahead with the original launch date of January 2027.
“It has become clear that additional time is required to complete the work required to set up the competition,” the statement said.
The international calendar is the reason for the delay, as the statement said, “with Test series against Australia and Sri Lanka in January and February, the available window has been significantly reduced.”

“Taking extra time will lead to success for the league” – NZC
NZC president Diana Puketapu-Lindon spoke to media persons about the delay in the launch of the league.
He said, “Our focus is on ensuring that the future of domestic T20 cricket in New Zealand is sustainable, competitive and in line with the global game. We are working closely with NZ20 and are encouraged by the progress made so far. Taking the extra time now will help ensure the competition is successful in the long term.”
“In the meantime, NZC will make arrangements to continue its Super Smash competitions for the 2026-27 season and host the upcoming tours of India and Sri Lanka men and Bangladesh women,” he said.

“Competition should be with international cricket” – NZ20 president
NZ20 Chairman Don MacKinnon also offered his views on the delayed launch.
“With growing interest from investors both in New Zealand and internationally, we have made strong progress in partnership with NZC,” he said. “However, we are committed to ensuring that NZ20 launches without compromise and is positioned for long-term success from day one.”
He added, “It is also important that the competition works alongside international cricket, not against it. Now that the international schedule has been confirmed, the window available to 2027 is very short. This revised timeline gives us the best opportunity to create a world-class competition that New Zealanders can be proud of and the fans deserve.”
He also said that investor interest in the league is increasing and the league will soon begin a formal ownership tender process.
“There has been increased interest from potential investors since the NZ20 was identified as the preferred alternative to the NZC,” MacKinnon said. “As a result, we will run a competitive process to identify the league’s primary investment partner as well as the ownership of the associated franchises,” he said.
“This additional time will also allow us to finalize key elements of the competition, including franchise locations, ensuring we can create strong regional connections and a compelling national footprint.”
