NBC recently greenlit a brand new TV adaptation of the popular New York Times game “Wordwords,” and fans can expect contributions from the Today show host as well as newly minted executive producer Jimmy Fallon.
The game show is set to go live sometime in 2027 and the announcement comes via an official description from NBC that promises that the TV version of the game “challenges players to solve five-letter word puzzles in a supersized battle of smarts, speed, and entertainment. It’s based on the way the puzzle community engages with Wordle every day – solving together, sharing wins, debating strategies, and cheering each other on.”
According to their plans “Now, that style of play comes to life as the most passionate and competitive players will join teams and go head-to-head in the ‘Verdal’ arena while playing for incredible cash prizes.”
Fallon has also spoken out after this news came out and it shows him saying, “I am so honored to be working with Savannah Guthrie on this show.”
“Savannah has that rare combination of intelligence, charm and warmth that makes everyone feel instantly welcome. And she clearly knows how to host a show. I’m superproud and happy and I think we’ve developed a solid gamer for prime-time.”
According to Variety a casting call has also gone live and even The New York Times says the company’s head of games, Jonathan Knight, “‘Wordley’ is already a social and shared experience. People don’t just play it, they talk about it, compare results and solve it together.”
That’s why, in their minds, the goal of developing the game show was to “translate the real experience of playing ‘Wordle’ with your friends and present something that ‘Wordle’ fans will expect. That meant being thoughtful about the show’s gameplay structure, pacing, and how players interact.”
