One person has died and several homes have been damaged in a major fire following a suspected gas explosion in Sao Paulo, according to local fire officials.
The incident took place on Monday in Jaguar neighbourhood, about 16 km from the city centre.
The São Paulo state fire department said the fire was probably caused by a liquefied petroleum gas explosion. Authorities deployed 12 fire engines to control the fire.
Local media footage showed destroyed roofs and thick smoke rising from residential areas.
A fire department spokesman told local media that rescue workers found the body of a man under the debris.
Two men and a woman were also rescued with minor injuries.
“Multiple buildings were affected. We don’t have exact numbers, but we believe about 10 were directly affected,” the spokesperson said.
Firefighters continued to search the area for possible additional victims Monday evening.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the explosion and the investigation is ongoing.
