Rory McIlroy says he is confident his troublesome foot injury will not affect his chances at the US PGA Championship after completing a practice session at Aronimink, near Philadelphia.
The world number two raised some concerns earlier this week when he stopped his practice round after just three holes due to pain in his right foot.
“Because I didn’t think I’d be able to walk the next six,” McIlroy said, explaining why he left the course in a golf cart.
“It was painful and felt a little soft when I walked in because of the little toe.”
McIlroy said the problem began after he developed a blister under the nail of his little toe during last week’s Truist Championship.
The 37-year-old later had the nail removed and changed shoes to ease the discomfort.
“I figured it out and separated the little toe from the other toe and putting a little pillow around it definitely helped,” he said.
After completing nine practice holes on Wednesday, McIlroy said: “I was pleasantly surprised by how good it felt.”
“It probably bothers me a little whenever your foot slips into the end of your shoe when walking downhill but that’s totally fine. A mountain out of a molehill.”
McIlroy began his US PGA campaign alongside Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm.
