What credit score is required for student loan refinancing?

    • Most major student loan refinance lenders require a FICO score of around 650 to 680 to qualify, but the lowest advertised rates are generally reserved for borrowers with scores of 740 or higher.
    • The top lenders cover from no published minimum (SoFi) to 720 floors (Brazos), with most clustering between 660 and 680.
    • Lender disclaimers consistently state that the advertised “introductory rates” require the shortest repayment term, autopay enrollment, and the strongest credit and income profiles, meaning the rate in the headline is rarely the rate the average borrower will get.

The credit score required to refinance student loans is one of the most common questions borrowers ask before applying.

Short answer: Most lenders want a FICO score in the mid-600s as a baseline, but the headline rates you see in marketing materials are almost always reserved for applicants with scores over 750, paired with strong income, a low debt-to-income ratio, AutoPay enrollment, and a willingness to take the shortest repayment term possible.

The gap between the threshold to qualify and the profile actually needed to get the best rate is where most borrowers get stuck. Knowing where the major lenders draw the line, and what the fine print says about who wins the lowest rates, is the difference between saving money and potentially not finding your student loan refinancing worthwhile.

The general minimum for refinancing is 650 to 680

At the major refinance lenders, the minimum credit score is typically between 650 and 680. The FICO model defines a “good” credit score as 670 to 739, which is published by most lenders or cited as their cutoff. Borrowers with scores below 650 typically face denial, materially higher rates, or the need to add a creditworthy co-signer.

Credit score is not the only factor. Lenders also look at income (often a minimum of $35,000 to $42,000), debt-to-income ratio (often limited to 50% to 65%), employment history, citizenship or permanent residency, and degree completion. Many lenders enforce strict rules for borrowers who have never completed their loan repayment schedule, but some lenders offer student loan refinancing without a degree.

What do the top student loan refinance lenders look for?

College Investor analyzed each major lender’s disclosures to see where they stand on minimum credit scores based on their published eligibility pages:

Earnest: : Minimum Rs 665 for borrowers with complete degree. Borrowers who have not completed the program associated with their loan need a minimum of $700. Earnest also reviews savings, employment and payment history.

ELFI: : Minimum Rs 680. Additional requirements include a bachelor’s degree, $35,000 minimum annual income, $10,000 minimum loan balance, and a debt-to-income ratio of less than 55%.

lendkey: : A minimum of 680 across its network of credit unions and community banks, with an income requirement of $36,000. Individual participating lenders within the network may set higher limits.

citizens: : There is no published minimum, but underwriters point to a score of 700 or higher. Other requirements include a $24,000 minimum income, a bachelor’s degree, and at least $10,000 in qualifying loans.

brazos: : 720 without a cosigner, 690 with one. Brazos only serves Texas residents (or those who attended Texas school) and requires an income of $60,000 without a cosigner.

Sophie: : No officially disclosed minimum. Industry reporting points to an effective level closer to 650 to 680, but the average approved borrower scores around 766. SoFi underwrites holistically, weighing income and financial history with credit.

How to Really Qualify for the Best Rates

Every refinance lender advertises a starting APR, and every lender includes language in the footer or rate disclosure that limits who actually qualifies for that number. The general pattern is almost the same at every lender: The lowest rates are only available to applicants who meet multiple conditions at the same time.

To obtain the lowest published APR, lenders typically require:

    • The most creditworthy applicant profile, generally defined as a FICO score of 740 or higher with strong income and a low debt-to-income ratio.
    • The shortest available repayment term, often a 5-year fixed-rate or variable-rate loan. Longer terms (10, 15, or 20 years) have higher rates.
    • Enroll in automatic payments, which typically results in a 0.25 percentage-point rate reduction. Drop the autopay and the rate goes back up.
    • A strong credit history and verifiable employment income.

Without checking all those boxes, the offered rate will be higher than the headline number, sometimes by several percentage points.

    What borrowers need to know

For a typical borrower with $40,000 in student loans, the difference between qualifying at the initial interest rate and the lender’s limit could amount to thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. This boosts your credit score before implementing one of the highest-return moves a borrower can make.

    Some practical steps:

    1. Get your credit report and FICO score before you apply. Free access is available through AnnualCreditReport.com and most major card issuers.
    2. Use the soft-pull prequalification tool. Most major refinance lenders (including Earnest, ELFI, and Splash) let you check estimated rates without running a hard inquiry on your credit report.
    3. Pay off the revolving balance first. Credit utilization is one of the fastest-growing inputs to the FICO score, and bringing card balances under 30% of available credit (and ideally under 10%) can move the score up quickly.
    4. Consider a creditworthy co-signer. Many lenders, including Brazos, waive the minimum score requirement when a co-signer is added.
    5. You generally should not refinance federal student loans. Transferring federal loans to private loans eliminates access to income-driven repayment, public service loan forgiveness, and federal hardship options. That compromise has to be weighed against the rate savings.
