In match number 58 of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, two legendary teams clashed with each other at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosted five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in one of the most beautiful stadiums in world cricket. However, due to obvious reasons, Hardik Pandya has missed the match.
Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. Both are unavailable today for respective reasons. The speedster has never captained MI before this match in 2026. Bumrah has led the Indian national team in Test cricket, serving as captain in two Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests in 2024–25 and against England in 2022.
Why is Hardik Pandya not playing today’s match?
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya is suffering from back spasms and has played only 8 matches this season, missing four matches. He struggled with form and was part of MI’s disappointing campaign, where they were once again eliminated early in the tournament. In the last three seasons, MI have qualified for the playoffs once under his captaincy.
Hardik has scored 146 runs in 8 matches and his strike rate has also decreased and he has taken only four wickets. This has been one of the major concerns for MI’s downfall this season. Despite performing well in the T20 World Cup, Pandya has failed to maintain the momentum and has once again disappointed the management and fans since his comeback in 2023.
Suryakumar Yadav could not play due to personal reasons
Apart from Hardik Pandya, another player who will not be able to play in this match is Suryakumar Yadav. In Hardik’s absence, the vice-captain was captaining the team, but he is also missing this match. The reason is not clear yet, but SKY and his wife recently gave birth to a baby girl before the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) match.
He has reportedly been granted parental leave by the franchise, especially as Mumbai is already out of the playoff race. The India captain has also been struggling with form in this IPL, scoring only 195 runs in 11 innings at an average of 17.73. This has been another matter of concern for the management and coaching staff.
Before becoming the captain of MI, I did not think that I would become a Test captain – Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah was present at the time of the toss and he also won the toss and decided to bowl first. He said, “We have decided to bowl first. We watched the last game and thought that maybe the wicket will be fine with the cold weather coming. I had not thought before becoming MI captain that I would be the Test captain (smiling).
“As much as we can, we have three games left and we want to enjoy and maybe upset some teams. Surya is not here due to personal reasons and Allah is also not there.
