We caught up with Butler at Los Angeles’ historic El Rey Theater to discuss her latest role – the role of YSL Global Ambassador – and the new face exclusively. YSL’s MYSLF Eau De Toilette Intense
The new scent is a woody, skin-musk scent, which combines fresh and elevated notes of bergamot, orange blossom, warm wood and white skin musk. Butler describes it as “fresh, warm and light”, the kind of scent he could wear every day. (He sprays it on his neck and wrists before heading out the door. We asked, because details matter, okay?)
This scent is personal and nostalgic for Butler, as he can trace its distinctive scent back to childhood memories with both of his parents. First, there’s the orange blossom note, which reminds him of growing up in Southern California. “I had an orange tree in my backyard and my mom and I used to pick oranges together,” he says.
Then, there are the woody notes – something he remembers smelling in the same way in his father’s cologne, which he used to steal as a child. Laughing, he says it was technically the first fragrance he ever wore. “My dad had it. I wish I could remember what it was called, but when I was a kid I used to go into his room and grab it off his shelf and spray it on him. I just remember it being really peppery and woody.”

What’s one grooming step you never skip?
brush my teeth.
If you had to leave the house in five minutes, what are some additional key products you would either put on or bring with you?
I would bring chewing gum with me…for me, it’s probably my phone, my wallet, my keys, and chewing gum.
What does your morning and evening routine look like?
I don’t keep my phone near my bed, so it’s pretty far away. I try not to look at it for at least the first hour of the day. I wake up, take a cold shower, meditate, write a little, and then make coffee. Usually, I’ll make a coffee before writing. Drink coffee, jot down some thoughts, and then get on with the day.
In the evening, when it starts to get dark, if I’m at home, I’ll light the fireplace and some candles. Usually the lights are not on in my house. I’ll shower and do the usual things before bed, brush my teeth, go to bed and read, and fall asleep.
What’s the best compliment someone can give you?
Your mother brought you up right.
