TL;DR
- Google’s new look for Gemini apps is being released on the eve of the company’s I/O 2026 developer conference.
- The refreshed user interface adds a blue and white gradient color scheme to the app, combining and relocating key functions.
- The Google Account and Settings tabs are now located in the sidebar, and the Tools and Attachments menus have been combined.
Google I/O 2026 officially starts tomorrow, but Google didn’t wait to push a sweeping Gemini app redesign to Android users. The new interface includes both visual and functional changes to the Gemini experience, and Android Authority has seen the update rolling out to multiple devices. The redesign matches the Gemini app for iOS overhaul that began rolling out to iPhone users earlier this month. It’s a minimalist homepage that changes the old white and gray aesthetic to a colorful blue and white gradient one.
The new Gemini app for Android homepages removes suggestion chips in favor of larger greetings. The homepage greeting is different each time you restart the Gemini app, and you may see messages like “The mic is yours” or “Ask away.” There’s a new icon for temporary chats in the top-right corner – instead of a dotted-line chat bubble icon, the Gemini app now uses a dotted line with a pen as the temporary chat button. The Google Account profile icon has been removed from the Gemini app homepage and is hidden inside the sidebar.
The new model picker is even more vague. It remains below the chevron button next to the sidebar, which now has two lines of icons instead of three. Previously, the model picker appeared below the chat box along with Attachments, Tools, Dictation, and Gemini Live buttons. Attachments and tools are merged into a combined menu shown with a “+” icon. This leaves three buttons inside the Gemini chat bubble: Attachment, Dictation, and Live.

Instead of appearing below the text field as before, these buttons now appear inline with the text field. As a result the Gemini app homepage chat box is enlarged, with a gradient blue background around it. Other functions, like New Chat, Search Chat, Images, Videos, and Library, are still found in the Gemini app sidebar. The same applies for notebooks and recent chats. A Settings gear appears with the user’s Google account name and profile picture, making it clear that Gemini app settings are behind this menu.
Overall, it’s a clean Gemini app user interface that looks a lot like the iOS version that debuted in early May. Interestingly, the iOS version of the app sports a translucent design that appears to be inspired by liquid glass. We’re not seeing the same effect on the Android version of the app, so it’s possible that the liquid glass look is only for iPhone and Mac users.
The refreshed look of the Gemini app for Android makes the model picker less obvious, and combining the Attachments and Tools menus into one can be confusing for users. What do you think of the latest Gemini app redesign? Let us know in the comments below.
