Surprisingly, Harbor himself asked this question to the creators in the show.
He demanded the truth from them.
“Hello, Duffer Brothers,” he said in a pre-recorded question, which Horowitz shared.
“I would like to know Hopper’s casting process.”
“I’m pretty sure I was the second choice, and I don’t know who I was the second choice for – maybe I was the third choice?
“But would you please answer the question of how I was cast as Chief Hopper and who had to say no to allowing me to take on that amazing, incredible role?”
Host Horowitz guessed it was Josh Brolin.
Immediately, Matt Duffer humorously clarified, “No, no, no, no, no, no.”
He then dropped the name of the first casting choice for Jim Hopper, saying, “No, it was Billy Crudup.”
Now, looking back at his original choice, Duffer admits, “It’s very different — like, everything happens for a reason, right?”
He adds, “So it’s just like once it clicks into place.”
Duffer revealed that Crudup rejected the role in Stranger Things: “But yes, Billy Crudup passed.”
“I don’t think he was doing much TV at that time,” he said.
Automatically, Harbor got the role and became one of the most famous faces on global television.
