John Travolta is sharing his thoughts behind his viral 2026 Cannes Film Festival look, specifically the colorful hat he wore on the red carpet.
The 72-year-old actor has become the talk of the town after stepping out at the premiere of his directorial debut. Propeller One-Way Night Coach, Wearing a white hat on Friday.
​The next day, at the film’s photocall, he again rocked a classy headgear look, this time wearing black wire-rimmed glasses with a black cap.
talking to cnnTravolta explained that the idea behind his much-discussed costumes was to represent himself not as an actor but as a director.
​”I said, ‘I’m a director right now. You’re an actor, playing a director, looking like an old-school director,'” he told the outlet.
Travolta continued, “So I looked at pictures from the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, ’60s and the old-school directors wore berets and glasses, and I thought, ‘That’s what I’m doing. I’m paying homage to being a director, so I’m going to pretend to be a director.'”

“I’ll know – ‘Oh, it was ‘Propeller One-Way Night Coach,’ it was Cannes, that’s when I won the Palme d’Or,’ and I’ll get the vibrancy of it,” he adds.
​Travolta also received the Cannes Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, the highest award given to a director for best feature film.
