Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide

    experimental fold

If the rumors are true, we might be getting a new addition to the Galaxy Fold series reportedly named Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. The main appeal is said to be the wide, almost square aspect ratio, similar to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This should make it more ergonomic and better for reading books or browsing the web.

    Pros

    • Snapdragon 8 Elite is rumored to feature Gen 5 chip
    • Could be cheaper than the standard Fold 8
    • more ergonomic aspect ratio
    • Must be able to do the same as the main fold 8

    Shortcoming

    • Only two rear cameras are expected
    • Battery size may be smaller than the Fold 8

    motorola razr fold

    Motorola’s great start

The Motorola Razr Fold is the company’s first book-style foldable and every effort has been made to ensure that it is very competitive against Samsung’s offering. Some of the highlights include IP49 rating, impressive camera specs, and large battery capacity.

    Pros

    • aggressive pricing
    • Large 6,000mAh battery, 80W charging
    • More impressive cameras than the Fold 8 Wide
    • Smooth outer display with 165Hz refresh rate
    • Support for stylus (sold separately)

    Shortcoming

    • Software may not be as sophisticated as Samsung’s
    • Slightly heavier and thicker than the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide
    • Only single version available

Samsung still Allegedly It continues to lead the global foldable smartphone market share, and it seems to be making big plans to retain it in 2026. Following the launch of its uber-premium Galaxy Z Trifold phone, the company is rumored to soon announce another model called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. As the name suggests, it is expected to be a wider version of the Galaxy Z Fold 8. If this is true, then this could possibly be another experimental product testing the waters just like the Galaxy S25 Edge.

While the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide won’t be a cheap phone by any means, it should be less expensive than the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8, if that puts it directly in the crosshairs of the Motorola Razr Fold. This is Motorola’s first book-style foldable and it’s already looking very promising.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to arrive in July, should you wait or get the Razer Fold now? Let’s compare both phones based on what we know so far and see how good they are.

Motorola Razr Fold was launched in the US on April 29, 2026. Pre-orders began on May 14 and it will go on sale from May 21. Motorola has priced the Razr Fold at $1,900, and that’s for the only variant with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It comes in two colors, Pantone Blackened Blue and Pantone Lily White.

We’re a few months away from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide officially arriving and I believe it should be priced slightly lower than the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8. Given that the current Galaxy Z Fold 7 price starts at around $2,000, we can assume the same for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (if not $100 more). This should bring the price of the Fold 8 Wide to around $1,800, if my assumptions are correct.

I’m also expecting a limited storage configuration for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. We can consider one or maximum two configurations, but no more. One of the configurations should definitely align with the Razer Fold, it’s just a question of which one.

The only evidence we have about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide are some renders. Additionally, we can see that the phone will have the same slim profile as the Galaxy Z Fold 7. It is approximately 4.2 mm thick when unfolded and less than 9 mm when folded. The weight should also be significantly less than the Razer Fold, closer to 200 grams (the Z Fold 7 is 215 grams).

The main difference is going to be the aspect ratio. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will be smaller, but wider, than the Razer Fold. For reference, you can look at the Pixel 10 Pro Fold for reference of what to expect. Due to this change in design, we are also expecting one less rear camera, but more on that later.

We’re expecting the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide to feature similar water and dust protection as the current Z Fold, if not better. This means at least an IP48 rating. You should also expect improvements in the strength of the hinge and folding UTG Glass.

Apart from the aspect ratio, the display specs should be similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to have a 5.4-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch folding screen. Both sizes are smaller than the Razer Fold.

    what to read next

In comparison, the Motorola Razr Fold has similar dimensions to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but is thicker and heavier. When opened, the Razer Fold is 4.7mm thick and significantly thicker when folded at 10.1mm. It is quite heavy at 243 grams, so in terms of ergonomics, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide should win this round easily.

Motorola has given the Razr Fold an impressive water resistance rating of IP48/IP49. It still doesn’t beat the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s IP68 rating, but it should be better than the Z Fold 8 Wide.

The Razer Fold has an impressive display with a 6.6-inch external screen and an 8.1-inch folding screen. The display specs are also top notch. The external display is protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, with a 165Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of up to 6,000 nits. The internal display has a 120Hz refresh rate and a maximum brightness that can reach 6,200 nits. The brightness of both screens should be more than double that of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.

The Razer Fold has the added benefit of supporting an active stylus, which has to be purchased separately. There was talk that Samsung is considering the idea of bringing S Pen functionality back to the Fold line, but we’ll have to wait and see if that actually happens.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is most likely to be used Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the same chip used in the Galaxy S26 Ultra. This is a step up from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, which is present in the Motorola Razr Fold. RAW performance should be better on the Razer but don’t expect a big difference with daily use. I think Samsung will stick with 12GB of RAM as standard for the Fold 8 Wide, while storage could be 256GB and 512GB or just 256GB.

As the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to be smaller than the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8, we may see a smaller battery. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 packs a 4,400mAh battery, which is expected to increase in the Z Fold 8. Therefore the capacity of Wide may be similar to Fold 7 or smaller. The charging speed should also be around 25W with 15W wireless charging. I’m curious to see if Qi2 will be supported.

In all likelihood, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide should run One UI 9 which will be based on Android 17. I’m fully expecting new Galaxy AI features that will be specific to the Fold 8 series and new UI elements to take advantage of the wider aspect ratio.

    Multitasking on Motorola Razr Fold

The Motorola Razr Fold has an almost flagship chip that should be good enough for even the most demanding tasks. It won’t match the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide in benchmark numbers, but that doesn’t really matter. Motorola is offering a single configuration of the Fold with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

The battery specifications are also very impressive. The Razer Fold has a massive 6,000mAh capacity with 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. However, both of these charging speeds will require specific Motorola chargers. I can say with confidence that Samsung will not be able to even come close to the charging speed or battery capacity offered by the Razer Fold.

Software is one area where the Razer Fold may not be able to compete adequately. Even though it runs Android 16 with the Hello UX skin and is promised to get seven years of OS upgrades, at least for now, it will be hard to match or beat Samsung’s polished One UI and its suite of AI features.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide vs Motorola Razr Fold: Camera

    motorola razr fold cameras

The Moto Razr Fold sports a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide, and a 50MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. On the front, the external display sports a 32MP camera, while the internal display uses a 20MP sensor. The Razer Fold is capable of recording videos up to 8K at 30fps.

The cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide are completely unknown at this time, so your guess is as good as mine. Rumors suggest that it may have dual 50MP sensors on the back for the main and ultrawide cameras. It won’t have a telephoto camera which puts it at a serious disadvantage for zoom shots. The front-facing cameras will likely be dual 10MP sensors, like we’ve seen on the Fold 7.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide vs Motorola Razr Fold: Should you wait until July?

A picture on the Motorola Razr Fold

We don’t know if the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is real or if it will launch in July, so waiting for it might not be the wisest thing to do, especially if you need a quick phone upgrade. If it does eventually launch, it would be nice to have a little more variety in Samsung’s foldable lineup. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide should be a more compact version of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and I really hope it gets a more attractive price as well.

The Motorola Razr Fold is currently one of the One of the best foldable phones in the market and its sale will start from May 21st. It’s not as thin or light as the Galaxy, but it matches or beats it in pretty much every other area. The price is great, there’s support for a stylus if you need it, and you get a set of Samsung-level OS updates and an incredible display. If you’re looking to dive into the world of foldables, the Razer Fold would be a good place to start.

    motorola razr fold

    an impressive start

The Motorola Razr Fold isn’t as compact as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, but it beats it in every other area. Plus, you can buy it now.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide

    an interesting concept

The idea of a wider Galaxy Z Fold device is nice, but if the price isn’t right, I don’t see many people lining up for it. Like the Galaxy S25 Edge, this could be Samsung testing the waters once again with a new series.
