Many parts of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area are under a severe storm watch as forecasters warn of damaging winds, large hail and dangerous heat conditions.
Environment Canada issued an alert Tuesday, saying conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms late in the day.
The national weather agency has warned that hail up to the size of a quarter could fall in the region and winds could blow at speeds of 90 to 110 km/h.
“Damaging wind gusts will be the main threat with these storms,” Environment Canada said.
“Local utility outages are possible. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible.”
The storm warning comes as a heat warning remains in effect across the city during Toronto’s first major heat event of the season.
By afternoon the temperature reached 30C, due to humid conditions the temperature felt closer to 36C.
Environment Canada urged residents to take precautions during extreme heat, warning that “extreme heat can affect everyone’s health.”
A major cooldown is expected this weekend, with the daytime maximum temperature expected to drop to 18 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and the minimum temperature falling to 13 degrees Celsius by Saturday.
