The latest update reveals that the US has taken AI initiative to detect fraud and waste in health programs to improve the healthcare sector and deliver maximum results followed by accurate reporting.
The US Department of Health and Human Services HHS said on Thursday it has launched a new AI-led initiative to review annual audits to strengthen oversight in federally funded health programs amid concerns about widespread fraud.
The program, called the Audit Enforcement and Risk Oversight Initiative, or AERO, will review at least five years of audit records of HHS-funded programs in all 50 states, the department said.
The move comes after the Trump administration in March launched a national anti-fraud task force, led by Vice President J.D. Vance, aimed at cracking down on healthcare scams.
The administration said earlier this month it would block new home health care and hospice providers from enrolling in Medicare for at least the next six months, citing concerns about fraudulent practices.
The US HHS agency said it would work closely with states and grant recipients to address the audit findings and strengthen internal controls and could take measures such as temporarily pausing payments, cutting grants entirely, or withholding future funds from recipients who fail to resolve issues.
Under federal law, non-federal entities, including states, local governments, nonprofits, and institutions of higher education, that spend at least $1 million annually in federal funds are subject to audit requirements.
The decision was made after HHS assessed that hundreds of grant recipients had not submitted their required audits, some of which were more than two years late.
