Urban Meyer has revealed that he initially advised Kyle Whittingham not to join Michigan Wolverines football, but later supported the move.
Speaking on The Script podcast, Meyer said that Whittingham contacted him after receiving interest from Michigan.
“I got a call from the Wolverines. And I said, ‘Wow! Wait a minute. And my first reaction was, ‘Don’t go there, buddy,'” Meyer recalled of Whittingham.
Meyer, who coached rival Ohio State Buckeyes football from 2012 to 2018 and went 7-0 against Michigan, said his feelings were shaped by one of college football’s most fierce rivalries.
Despite this, the mayor later changed his stance after speaking further with Whittingham.
“My comment after talking for about 20 minutes was, ‘It’s a perfect fit, I get it,'” Meyer said. Of all the people in the United States, it’s you they should call.”
Meyer also criticized recent controversies involving Michigan, including the NCAA investigation and the Connor Stallions sign-stealing scandal.
“I lost a little bit of respect for what happened over the last four or five years. The bullshit that’s going on out there is not the Wolverines team or program,” Meyer said.
