not mine, may your wish be fulfilled
“He went away about a step, and knelt down and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.’ Then an angel appeared from heaven and strengthened him.” -Luke 22:41-43
Have you ever prayed the above prayer? Have you ever said to God, “Not my will, but your will be done.” What a wonderful statement from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
This may seem like a very dangerous statement. Do we really trust God enough to completely surrender our lives to Him? Are we really ready to do anything? However, I would argue that it is even more dangerous to reach the end of our lives, stand before God, and fail to hear the words, “Well done good and faithful servant…”
When we first accept Jesus as our Savior, we entrust our spiritual well-being and the destination of our soul to Him. Then, we slowly begin to understand what it means to live the words, “Not mine, but your wish be fulfilled.”
Although Jesus was Lord of the universe, He placed His authority dependent on His Father, God—the God of all creation. And through the will of Jesus, God was able to accomplish some miraculous work through him. His death…His resurrection. He changed the world completely.
Have you ever prayed that prayer, “Not my will, but your will be done?” I wonder how the world can be changed by our willingness to do anything, by our willingness to be who God wanted us to be. Will you have the faith and courage to pray this prayer today?
