Phil Collins has refused to perform at his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction later this year.
in the air Tonight The hitmaker, who was previously honored as a member of Genesis in 2010, has suffered a number of health issues in recent years, and although he feels he is in better shape now than he has been in “a lot of time”, he admitted it is unlikely he will sing at the ceremony in November.
When asked about performing live in future, he said bbc breakfast“I can’t really see it happening, but I’m healthier now than I have been in a while.”
Phil confessed, “I mean, it’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thing, they asked me if I would perform and I said no, (because) you have to be match fit to do something like that.”
The iconic musician said, “You can’t just go on stage – you have to rehearse, and by that time if you’re not singing your voice will be shot, and then it won’t be any good, so I wouldn’t want to do that.”
However, Phil would consider a full tour and said, “But were I to go out again, I would consider it, yes.”
The 75-year-old, who took over drumming duties from his son Nick during Genesis’ final shows in 2022 when he performed from a chair, insisted his health is now “fine”.
“The last 18 months have been good. Before that, it wasn’t so good,” he said.
Phil revealed, “Health-wise everything happened to me at the same time. Everything that could go wrong went wrong, but everything is fine now.” He further added, “I had a knee problem, which I’ve had for a while but I played through it, I toured through it.”
“But I ended up having to have knee surgery, and I had to have it done five times because it either kept getting infected or it would break,” he said.
Reflecting on the physical limitations that forced him to step away from drumming, Phil recently admitted that the adjustment has taken its toll emotionally.
In a rare conversation with Zoe Ball BBC Two’s Phil Collins: Era’s – In Conversation, “It’s still kind of sinking in,” he said.
“I’ve spent my whole life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do it is a shock,” Phil Collins said of how his health affected him and his music career.
