Blytheville, Arkansas, was not an easy place to grow up, and LG Malik He knows firsthand. The streets and the difficult personal environment pushed him towards music, where he began writing verses inspired by pain and performing them wherever possible, partly as catharsis, but also as an escape. Eventually, Atlanta became both a home and a much bigger stage.
His 2024 remake of Lucas Graham’s “Seven Years” went viral, surpassing 35 million streams and attracting the attention of tastemakers and music news outlets. That track introduced her music to a wider audience while solidifying the personal mindset behind “Living Gold”, a perspective shaped by resilience and hardship.
Following the previous releases of “Living Gold” and “Carved in Gold”, Malik concluded the trilogy with “Rose Gold”. Whereas earlier projects had heavy emotional tension, this new chapter feels more methodical and introspective. Fatherhood and personal stability reshape the emotional center of the record, giving the EP a quieter and more contemplative atmosphere.
The record is full of unexpected stylistic changes. “The Story Goes On” begins with aquatic synths reminiscent of early 90s jazz fusion, while the next track leans towards moody prog-style riffs. Later, the smooth, fusion-inspired intro to “10 out of 10”, featuring Tucci, paints a vivid picture of romantic devotion and domestic stability.
The synth-driven production balances gritty textures with upbeat melodies, while softer moments reveal the emotional vulnerability behind lyrics about commitment and lasting relationships. Throughout the EP, modern hip-hop blends seamlessly with elements of pop, jazz and fusion.
Of these nine songs, “Rose Gold” provides a thoughtful conclusion to the themes introduced throughout the trilogy. The EP feels warmer and more grounded than its predecessors, while still possessing the emotional weight that defines LG Malik’s songwriting. At its core, the record reflects the emotional work involved in maintaining intimacy over time.
