YouTube has announced that it is going to be more transparent in the way it labels AI-generated content.
Starting today, all videos uploaded to YouTube that are meaningfully AI-altered or generated will see a prominent AI label. Long format videos will show labels below the video player and above the description, while shorts will show the labels as an overlay directly over the video.
If so, YouTube still primarily requires content creators to tag their videos as AI-generated, but it now also has a content detection system that will analyze and flag AI-generated content even if it isn’t manually tagged. If videos are incorrectly identified as AI-generated, creators can update the disclosure status in YouTube Studio, but if the video was created using YouTube’s own AI tools, like Veo or Dream Screen, or if it includes C2PA metadata, the disclosure will remain in place.
YouTube says the disclosure label does not change how videos are recommended or monetized, but only increases transparency around them.
