The Carolina Hurricanes moved one step closer to the Stanley Cup Final after taking a dominant 3-0 lead over the Montreal Canadiens in the first period of Friday’s Eastern Conference Finals Game 5.
Carolina entered the series leading 3–1, and with the win clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Montreal had its first big chance when Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov was sent off for tripping early in the period. However, the Canadiens failed to take advantage of the power play.
The Hurricanes started the scoring midway through the frame when Taylor Hall found the net.
After Montreal unsuccessfully challenged the goal, Carolina got an opportunity on the power play, but could not immediately take the lead.
The second goal came a few minutes later when Logan Stankoven doubled Carolina’s lead after assisting on the first goal.
Carolina continued its dominance and added a third through Eric Robinson, whose playoff tally gave the home team complete control in the first intermission.
The Hurricanes defeated Montreal 15–4 in a lopsided first round.
