Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Edelman, one of the most successful coaches in NBA history, has died at the age of 79.
Edelman had a remarkable coaching career spanning nearly three decades in the NBA, finishing with a regular season record of 1,042 wins and 749 losses.
His total ranks him 10th on the league’s all-time coaching wins list.
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 and received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023 for his contributions to the game.
During his career, Edelman served as the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Responding to his death, the Kings said in a statement: “The Sacramento Kings organization is deeply saddened by the passing of Rick Edelman, a beloved coach whose leadership, character and vision helped define an era of Kings basketball that inspired our city and enthralled fans around the world.”
“During his eight seasons in Sacramento, he led the team to unprecedented success and helped create some of the most memorable moments in franchise history,” the team said.
Edelman’s family includes his son David Edelman, the current head coach of the Denver Nuggets.
