A Prayer to Give Grace to Moms This Mother’s Day (and Every Day)By: Rachel Wojo

Bible Reading:“He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate.” – Psalm 111:4

    Listen or Read Below:

For many years, I dreaded Mother’s Day

When I reflect on that season, I believe the dread started with the fact that my mom was in heaven, and it seemed like every corner of the retail world was celebrating while I was struggling. The grocery store aisles seemed to be on pink overload. There were ads of laughing mothers and daughters on every form of media. Sermon illustrations reminding you to call your mom or cook dinner for her. I know it’s normal, but it felt like all these things were pressing on a scar in my heart.

If you’ve lost your mom or know someone who is coping with the complicated feelings that Mother’s Day often brings, I want you to read these words: Your ache is real, and God sees you. If you know someone who is experiencing this season for the first time, maybe you could whisper those words over them

Gradually, the Lord shifted my heart away from the pain of Mother’s Day and towards the sweetness of it. He didn’t erase the grief completely, but I began to focus on the gifts God had given me. I had been given the privilege of mothering, and there were women who were walking the beautiful, exhausting road of motherhood alongside me.

One year, on the Friday before Mother’s Day, a good friend brought flowers to my door. She didn’t have a speech prepared. She didn’t try to fix my heart. She just showed up with flowers and a hug.

That small act of grace has stayed with me for many years. I’ve tried to remember to pay her kindness forward, especially in the days leading up to Mother’s Day. This year, I thought: what if we all became that kind of person for the moms in our lives? Maybe we could make it not just for Mother’s Day but for all the ordinary days when motherhood feels invisible and relentless?

Psalm 111:4 tells us that the Lord is gracious and compassionate. Grace and compassion are woven into His very character. Notice the first half of that verse: “He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered.” God doesn’t just do gracious things and move on. He makes sure they’re remembered. He wants us to look back and see His fingerprints as He works through the lives of others around us. It might look like a text that says, “You’re doing better than you think.”

Most of us are carrying far more than the eye can see. Whether it’s the mental load of managing a household, the guilt of losing patience again, the grief of a struggling child or the loneliness of feeling like everyone needs something but there’s not enough to go around. Grace says, “I see you, and you don’t have to earn my kindness.”

Imagine the beauty of this season if we embraced showing up without asking, speaking to effort and not just results, giving permission to not be okay, and praying for her. Let’s be people who see the graciousness and compassion of our God and long to pour it out on others. Pray with me?

    Let’s Pray:

    Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the moms in our lives, both the ones who are thriving and the ones who are barely holding on.

You see every load of laundry and every whispered prayer over a sleeping child. You see the mom who smiled at church this morning and cried in the parking lot after. You know every sacrifice that goes unnoticed and every fear that goes unspoken.

Lord, make us people who extend Your grace to these women. Open our eyes to what they need, not only on Mother’s Day, but in the ordinary, exhausting days when no one is celebrating them. Give us the courage to show up, to speak life, and to carry their burdens with them.

For every mom reading this, Father, remind her right now that Your grace is enough for today. She doesn’t have to be perfect. She is already Yours

    In Jesus’ name,

    Amen.
