He added: “The King and Queen did something to me that no one else could do, without even asking! It is an amazing honor to have both of them in the United States.” Mr Trump’s full message was: “In honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House and returned to their wonderful country, I am lifting the tariffs and restrictions on whiskey that relate to Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on whiskey and bourbon, two very important industries within Scotland.

“People have wanted to do this for a long time, there was great inter-country trade, especially with used wooden barrels.

“The King and Queen asked me to do something no one else could do, without even being asked! It’s an amazing honor to have those two with Donald J. Trump, the President of the United States.”

Earlier today, Mr Trump praised Charles as “the greatest king in my book” as he bid farewell to his royal guests at the White House.

The King and Queen concluded their “amazing whistle-stop” US state visit by saying goodbye to the President and First Lady and attending a traditional block party in Virginia.

In Washington, the two couples said a warm goodbye outside the South Portico of the White House, with Mr Trump telling the media as he posed for a final photo, “He’s a great king, the greatest king in my book”.

After this, American journalists seized the opportunity to ask questions to Charles. Unaccustomed to being harassed by the media, the King hesitated before the President intervened and said: “We’ll talk later.”

After this all four went inside for a while and after a few minutes came out once again having an animated conversation.

There were handshakes, more people said goodbye, and as the king’s car drove away, Mr Trump pointed and said: “Really great people. We need more people like that in our country.”
