Sabrina Carpenter has formally apologized in a recent statement after misunderstanding a cultural chant during her performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
The singer was on stage on Friday night when she stopped mid-song after hearing loud noise from the crowd. Confused by the sound, she asked if someone was “yodeling” and said she didn’t like it. When a fan responded that it was part of their culture, Carpenter called the moment “awkward” before moving on with the show.
The awkward moment spread online, leading to many people identifying the chant as “Zaghrouta”, a traditional celebratory chant used in Arabic cultures at weddings and parties.
The exchange led many to criticize the singer and dismiss her comments.
Carpenter then wrote on X on Saturday afternoon, “I’m sorry.” “I didn’t see this person with my own eyes and couldn’t hear clearly. My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm, and had no ill intentions. It could have been handled better!”
He added, “Now I know what Zaghrouta is!” He added. “I welcome all the excitement and enthusiasm from here.”
