Cybercrime losses to increase by ~60% for 60+ age group in 2025 – Unknown Investor

I didn’t expect it, but based on the number of questions coming in, the volume of comments, and the frequency with which readers share articles with others, interest in recent cybersecurity-related articles has absolutely dropped.

I only have two more articles planned for the series (Hardware Security Keys and an overall plan for keeping yourself and vulnerable loved ones safe), and then we’ll get back to more specific content (albeit mixing in cybersecurity-related topics here and there, since that’s really a core part of personal finance).

In any case, the series so far is as follows:

From 2018-2024, losses from cybercrime for people aged 60+ are expected to rise from $649 million to $4.8 billion – a seven-fold increase. (And it is generally accepted as fact that actual losses are much higher than the reported figures, given that many people never report their losses due to not being bothered by it or feeling embarrassed.)

Last week, the FBI released its annual report with the figure for 2025: $7.748 billion. This is an increase of approximately 60% in just one year. This is what it looks like:

And with AI tools being dramatically more powerful this year than last, I have to imagine that the 2026 figure is going to be even worse.
