His successor will not only have to deal with profound political and financial challenges, but will also be tasked with pursuing the reforms needed to make the UN fit for the future – at a time when the UN and international law are under direct attack.
Two men and two women competing for the position on Tuesday and Wednesday are attending meetings General Assembly During which he will outline his vision for the United Nations and answer questions from Member States and civil society representatives about his leadership experience and qualifications, UN reform and the three pillars of the organization – peace and security, development and human rights.
They are Michelle Bachelet, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and former President of Chile; Rafael Grossi, current head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)iaea); Rebecca Grinspan, current head of the United Nations Agency for Trade and Development (UNCTAD); and former Senegalese President Macky Sall.
