It is very easy to find picture books for our children because you can immediately read it to see if it is suitable or not. When they start reading longer chapter books, it can be a little more challenging to find really good books that offer an engaging story and appropriate content.
There are plenty of books that are just fine, there are plenty that are popular for a season, and then there are stick to. These are the books that they read, love, take home and remember even years later. They are keepers!
H is 14 now, but when I asked her to think about the books she loved most when she was 11 or 12, these were the ones that immediately came to mind. I thought it was remarkable. There’s something really good about a book that stays with you years later. This usually means that it offers more than just entertainment; It probably made you feel something or engaged you deeply in the story.

This is a great pick for readers who enjoy a bit of fantasy with a bit of depth.
H says: Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this book, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s full of adventure, friendship, and so much more! A girl is chosen to attend a school to become a princess and must leave her family and friends to attend. She makes new friends, learns skills, and even has to save her classmates when danger arises. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a charming story involving royalty.
2. tuesday at the palace By Jessica Day George
A castle that adds new rooms onto itself is a pretty fun premise, and this story really embodies the magic of that idea. It feels imaginative and whimsical, but also has enough mystery and thrills to keep a reader engaged. It’s great for kids who love creative worlds without anything heavy.
H says: I really like this story about a girl named Celie who lives in a castle that has a mind of its own. It is fascinating and there are many books in the series. Celie is always trying to map out the many rooms in the castle, but she is always moving places and creating new rooms, making the task quite challenging. One day Celie’s parents go missing and it’s up to her, her siblings, and the castle to protect the kingdom.
3. the borrowers by Mary Norton
This classic has such a cozy charm. The idea of little people living secretly in a house and borrowing small items to survive is unforgettable. It feels cool, nostalgic, and it’s one of those stories that sticks with you long after you’ve finished it.
H says: This book is about little people who live in a big house under the floors and inside the walls. Only Pod, the father, is allowed into the rooms of the house to steal (“borrow”) things necessary for their survival. However the daughter is alone and desperate to find a friend and one day a man catches her eye! This story is imaginative and unique. The characters will make you smile.
4. Because of Winn-Dixie By Kate DiCamillo
This book is tender, funny, and full of heart. It beautifully presents friendship, loneliness, belonging and community. It’s gentle without being superficial, and it’s exactly the kind of story that kids of those two years can really connect with.
H says: This is a sweet story about a girl who finds a stray dog and names him after a grocery store. The dog is special and helps him in more ways than he expected. I personally found this story heartwarming and thought it was really sweet.
5. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by cs lewis
There’s a reason it’s remained beloved across generations. Thrills, surprises, a clear sense of good and evil, the magic of Narnia… it all comes together to fascinate young readers. For children who enjoy classic fantasy, this is well worth a read.
H says: This is an amazing book! The story takes place during World War II when four siblings are sent to live with an aging professor. One day, the youngest child sneaks into the cupboard while playing hide and seek on a rainy day. She enters a magical world called Narnia. When the other three siblings head towards Narnia they discover that the place has been frozen over. The adventure begins and when they meet the great lion, Aslan, they discover that they have been called to save the land of Narnia and must wage war against the White Witch.

Judy Blume just got kids and this book is a good example of that. Sheila is funny, complex, and very relatable, especially for readers struggling with fear, confidence, and growing independence. It’s a light read, but still packs a punch.
H says: This book is really fun and original. It’s about a girl named Sheila who is afraid of… well, a lot of things. When her family goes on summer vacation, Sheila has to face all her fears. She also makes friends, gets into mischief, and maybe even has to admit that she’s not perfect at all.
7. esperanza rising By Pam Munoz Ryan
It is beautifully written and emotionally rich. It tells a touching story of change, hardship, resilience, and hope, and it can really open the door to some meaningful conversations. For those ready for a story with a little more emotional depth, this is a wonderful choice.
H says: This story is a book about a rich Mexican girl who has everything she ever wanted. Then something terrible happens and Esperanza and her mother are forced to flee to California where they have to work in harsh conditions. Esperanza is not used to the hard work and financial struggles caused by the Great Depression, but when her mother becomes ill, it is up to her to save them both.
8. Penderwicks by Jean Birdsall
This book has a very warm, timeless feel. It’s full of brother-sister dynamics, outdoor adventures, family life, and the kind of overall charm that’s becoming harder to find. It feels relaxing and fun at the same time, which is probably why it connected so well with readers.
H says: This is a holiday story of four sisters and their father. The sisters are curious and can’t stop themselves from exploring the grounds. Along the way they make some exciting discoveries and go on many adventures. They also meet a boy whose mother realizes that she doesn’t like the idea of them all playing together. This story is fun, playful, and a joy to read.
9. book of three by Lloyd Alexander
For readers who are ready to dive deeper into fantasy, this is a great recommendation. It has memorable characters, adventure, humor, and a strong quest-driven story that makes it easy to turn the pages. This is a great entry into classic fantasy for this age group.
H says: This book is really well written and adventurous. It is about a helpful pig farmer named Taran. When the oracle pig runs away, Taran sets out on a great journey to find the pig. Along the way he meets new friends, encounters the Horned King, and meets Prince Gidevon. This book is full of adventure and personality.
10. gregor the overlander by Suzanne Collins
This is a good choice for kids who love adventure and a fast-moving story. It features an imaginative underground world, high stakes, and a main character who feels easy to root for. If your kid likes action and fantasy with a little edge, this is a really fun one to add to the list.
H says: This story, written by the author of The Hunger Games, is also very unique. It’s about a boy named Gregor who falls into the Underland and has to try to get back home. Little does he know that a prophecy has been written about him and the adventure begins. All the living animals and insects in the Underland are huge and Gregor has to meet them all. It took me several chapters to read this story, but I ended up enjoying it a lot.
What makes these such great books for tweens?
Looking through her list, I noticed a few themes.
First of all, all of these books have strong stories. None of them seem overly trendy, although some have had their time in the spotlight. They are character-driven, imaginative, and emotionally engaging in a variety of ways.
Second, they offer a good variety. Some are fantastical, some are realistic, some are funny, and some are more heartwarming and reflective. This mix is helpful because not every 11 or 12 year old reader is looking for the same kind of story. Although I will say now that K is 11, she has read most of these and would give them a thumbs up as well.
And ultimately, these books have staying power. H did not need to wander here and there to remember them. These were the books that immediately came to mind, which tell me that they really meant something to him.
Book Recommendations for 11- and 12-Year-Old Girls
Of course, good books are good books, and this list isn’t just for girls (in fact I think on the surface Gregor the Overlander would appeal more to boys at first!). But if you’re looking for book recommendations for an 11- or 12-year-old girl, I think this is a particularly lovely list to start with.
There’s adventure, adventure, imagination, humor and heart. There are strong girls, memorable families, magical worlds, and stories that help children build empathy and confidence. In other words, the kind of good books we’re all hoping to get.
