KAMPALA (WORTH NEWS) – Church leaders in central Uganda have expressed shock after a preacher was allegedly murdered following an evangelistic event.
According to Christians familiar with the case, Alfred Kitenga was beaten and stabbed on the Northern Bypass in the Kawala area of Wakiso District at about 9:30 pm on 9 April.
Christian news agency Morning Star News reports that the attack occurred when Kitenga and his wife Anna Grace Nabirye were returning home after campaigning in the Namunguna area of the capital, Kampala.
Nabirye said the couple accepted rides from men who claimed to be motorcycle taxi drivers and were fellow Christians attending the event. “We believed them because they said they were fellow believers who had heard the message,” she said.
During the journey, passengers diverted to another route and additional people arrived later, he said.
violent attack
“What happened next was sudden and violent,” Nabirye recalled.
She said the attackers beat them and stabbed her husband before leaving him near their home.
Church leaders later found Kitenga’s body on the roadside and alerted the police, who took him for postmortem.
A local church leader insisted, “This is a painful loss to the body of Christ.”
Officials have started investigation. On Wednesday, no suspects had been arrested, and no motive had been officially confirmed.
security concerns
The killing has raised concerns among Christian groups about the safety of preachers, especially during evening sermons.
Some church leaders are urging greater caution and additional safety measures for evangelism teams.
Uganda generally guarantees religious freedom, although incidents of violence have occurred.
According to the advocacy group Open Doors, Uganda was not among the countries most severe for Christian persecution, but attacks have been recorded in some areas recently.
Muslims constitute about 12 percent of the population.
