“True silence is rest of the mind and is to the soul what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment” (William Penn).
Our need for peace is increasing with each passing day. It’s a noisy world we live in in many ways, and we can’t tolerate the noise without a few moments of respite. Bullies have always known that it is possible to drive a person crazy by making constant noise, even if it is nothing more than dripping water. We have an inescapable need for peace: our mind and heart need stillness and silence to rest. And not only that, they need these things Grow. “I cannot become the person I need to be without time for quietness. As we grow, stillness is an essential part of growing deeper” (Charles R. Swindoll).
However, our need for peace should not send us to a forest or a mountain top to live isolated from another human being. Peace, like physical sleep, is a necessity from time to time, but it is not the ultimate goal of life, and we cannot let the enjoyment of things like meditation distract us from our responsibilities to other people. As Morton Kelsey suggests, “What we do externally with our lives, how well we care for others, is as much a part of meditation as what we do with peace and turning inward.”
Yet it cannot be denied that in these days of hectic activity we need more peace than we usually get. The busier our lives become, the more discipline it takes to find time for solitude and peace. Simply accepting that detachment is a Property This would be a step in the right direction, leading us to greater happiness. We are too quick to dismiss ideals like peace and simplicity as obsolete, and we need to start appreciating their goodness once again. “Happiness is the product of a sober eye” (Austin O’Malley).
Peace is an aspect of maturity – physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. Both the perception of its value and the discipline of its practice require personal development. And like most forms of positive development, peace requires commitment.
