Lord’s Prayer
1 On another occasion, Jesus was praying at a certain place. When he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father who art in heaven! (1) hallowed be your name. May your kingdom come. May your will be fulfilled on earth as it is in heaven. (2) 3 Give us our daily bread every day. 4 Forgive our sins, as we forgive all who sin against us. (3) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” (4)
keep praying
5 He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 Because a friend of mine is on a journey and has come to me, and I have nothing to present to him.’ 7 And the one inside replies, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already closed, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give it to you.’ 8 I tell you, even if he does not get up and give him anything, because he is his friend, yet because of his stubbornness he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
9 “I say to you, keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep knocking, and it will be opened to you.” 10 Because whoever asks gets it. He who searches finds. And it will be opened to him who knocks.
11 “What father among you will give him a stone if his son asks for bread, or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of the fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will a scorpion give him it? 13 So if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”
