Meryl Streep just claimed this the devil Wears Prada Had to “scrabble” for money because it was labeled a “chick flick”.
The 76-year-old actress, who is reprising her role as Miranda Priestly in the upcoming sequel, recalled how difficult it was to raise the budget for the David Frankel-directed adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s novel because of how the studio viewed genres.
But I am saying Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Merrill said: “Twenty years ago, it was classified as a ‘chick flick,’ and that designation hasn’t worn well after Barbie and Mamma Mia! — to throw it out — and other movies that completely surprise the studios that people want to see them, because they have girls at the center of their story, women at the center of the story.”
“So, we had to struggle with our budget. And that was true,” the iconic actress explained.
He revealed, “I’ve talked to Greta (Gerwig) about it, it was a little truer with Barbie than what they spend on other movies.”
But after the film grossed over $326 million worldwide in 2006, there were no such problems when making the sequel.
To which Meryl joked, “This one, honey, they spent the money.”
Whereas circulationFamous editor Anna Wintour is widely considered to be the inspiration for Meryl’s character Miranda, with the veteran actress describing how she attracted the two directors to her portrayal.
Describing her character, she said, “If Mike Nichols and Clint Eastwood had a child, it would be Miranda Priestly.”
Meryl continued, “Just because of the command on the set. Mike would do it with a kind of sly humor, and Miranda knows what she’s saying is kind of sarcastic, but she also knows it’s kind of funny.”
“And quiet, because Clint never raised his voice. He directed, and people had to lean forward to hear what he was saying,” she explained.
Additionally, the 76-year-old also praised her co-star Anne Hathaway, who is returning the devil Wears Prada Sequel as Andrea Sachs.
he told Harper’s Bazaar Magazine: “(I was) surprised that there were not only beautiful and young – I think everyone is young – but worryingly thin models… I thought that was all addressed years ago. Annie noticed it too.”
Meryl Streep said of her experience working with Anne Hathaway again, “And she talked to the producers about it and promised that the models on the show that we were putting together for our movie wouldn’t be so weak! She’s a stand-up girl.”
